The murder
After considering a number of specific people to be their victim, including their own fathers, the men chose a 14 year old boy by the name Bobby Franks who was a distant cousin of Richard's. Bobby Franks was the son of the millionaire Jacob Franks. The men were already aquainted with Bobby, so when they saw him walking home from school he went happily with them on that day. They drove Bobby in a rental car to within a few blocks of the his home in Hyde Park then suddenly grabbed him, stuffed a gag in his mouth, and smashed his skull four times with a chisel. Bobby fell to the floor and bled to death in the car. The men next drove away, went out for lunch, and then went to a culvert along the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. Leopold and Loeb then dunked Boby's head underwater to make sure that he was dead. Next, they poured acid on his face so that he would be hard to indentify and then they stuffed his body into a drainpipe.
The men then left the body and drove to Nathan's home where they played cars and drank. Around midnight that night, the men called the Franks' residence and told Mr. Franks that he could soon expect a ransom demand for the return of his son. After this, Nathan and Richard typed out a letter on a stolen typewriter and mailed it to the Franks house. By the time the letter arrived, Bobby Franks body had already been found. Bobby's body was found so easily because they had accidentally left his feet sticking out of the drainpipe.
